Today marks the first day of Teacher Appreciation Week at Toodie’s school. Since she will be graduating from VPK in only a few short months I am happy to do what I can to show her two incredible teachers how much I appreciate them. It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since we stepped foot into the school that helped my daughter learn, grow, and flourish. I am so sad to say goodbye to the teachers and staff that she has grown so close to. Kindergarten is right around the corner. Before we move on towards a new journey it’s only right to close out the year with recognition towards those that have helped pave the road for my little one to walk on.
To start Teacher Appreciation Week off I made a little something that both teachers could use to spruce up their classroom. Lately I have been enjoying making pieces of home decor from simple white canvases that can be displayed and admired. I thought it would be fun to create two Bejeweled Initial Canvases that the teachers could hang up and enjoy all year round.
Supplies:
- glittered card stock
- multicolored rhinestones
- small or medium sized white canvas
- scrapbook letter stickers
- glue gun
Begin by tracing the first letter of the teacher’s last name onto your glittered card stock color of choice. Cut the letter out of the card stock and use the hot glue gun to attach it in the top center area of the canvas. Leave a few inches between the letter and the bottom of the canvas. Later on you will be using this empty space to add the teacher’s name.
Sort through your rhinestones and collect shades that are alike and will match the color of glittered card stock you chose to use. Try to find as many similar colors as you can because this will add dimension and extra sparkle to your art. I used different tones of purples and blues to compliment the Royal Purple card stock.
The easiest way to attach the stones is with a hot glue gun. Otherwise, they pop off very easily and may leave gaps. Fit the rhinestones along the shape of the letter and glue each individually or in groups. Try to cover as much area as you can but still allow the glittery surface underneath to show through.
Once you have your jeweled letter finished you can use the hot glue gun to add extra gems on blank areas of the canvas. Scatter them in different areas, leaving the bottom panel open.
Using scrap booking stickers spell the name of your child’s teacher underneath your bejeweled letter. Even though these do have adhesive attached to the back I would suggest using the hot glue gun to secure them in place. Carry the scattered jeweled pattern down towards the bottom of the canvas and fill in any areas that need an extra gem.
“It takes a BIG heart to shape little minds.” This week remember to show your appreciation for the teachers and educators in your child’s life. No token is too small!
