Growing up I had my fair share of insecurities and awkward moments. Until middle school I was always the tallest child in my class, had an unruly frizzy perm accompanied by the biggest bangs you could fit on a human forehead, pale skin, huge round glasses with thick frames, crooked pinkies (which I share with my mom and daughter), and a shy personality to hide behind. Even though most of this was the norm in the 90’s it still took a lot of time for me to embrace my beauty, goofiness and all. Today I feel beautiful because I am mother and I think we can all agree each of us has a special glow inside of us.
Self-esteem is something I feel all young girls struggle with at some point or another. I know I did and regardless of how strong your support system is sometimes you just have to ride out the journey. Every girl has to find themselves and discover what makes them feel beautiful inside and out. Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves and we all have our own definition of beauty.
Who do I feel beautiful for? As a mother of a little girl that’s an easy one for me to answer. I feel beautiful for my daughter- the one with the big beautiful brown eyes, crazy curly hair, semi toothless smile, and absolutely contagious personality. I know that growing up in a world of unrealistic expectations and picture perfect media can be a tough one. This is why I intend on smothering her with a blanket of self confidence and showing her that beauty truly lies within. It’s important for her and every child to know that imperfections are the new PERFECTION. There is something special about each and every person in this world. That’s what puts the beauty in beautiful. This is my legacy.
