Tis season for sneezin’! Are you prepared? When you have a child in school it’s nearly impossible to avoid cold and flu season. At this point I don’t even know when cold and flu season officially begins because we have cootie bugs hanging around all year. Toodie and I both spent the majority of January suffering from a virus that left us sick and miserable. From inflamed tonsils to regular fevers- it was no fun and not an ideal way to start the new year. We are finally back to feeling good again and I credit my “sickness stash” for making those unbearable days slightly more comfortable. Everyone needs one this time of year and there are 6 “must-have” items that you can always find in ours.
01. When the flu strikes the last thing you want to do is run to the store and grab the essentials for surviving the sickness. I prefer to stay in bed lounging in my pajamas while surfing Netflix because my body is aching and the idea of moving is painful in itself. Good luck dragging me outta there! By having Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil Severe on hand you can relieve even the worst of symptoms immediately. I like to keep my medicine cabinet fully stocked and ready to go for cold and flu season because it’s better to be prepared when those icky feelings arrive.
Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu are now available in caplet or liquid form for those of you who have a preference. This duo alleviates discomfort during the day as well as in the evening so you can tackle your to-do list and still enjoy and peaceful night’s sleep. I picked mine up at Walmart, my one stop shop for everything needed to get through cold and flu season. Having a 24 hour Walmart a few miles away from home is such a convenience and saves me a ton of money. You can grab Vicks Severe, Puffs tissues, ingredients for chicken soup, and a warm blanket all at once!
Here are a few of the common cold symptoms you can expect relief from: nasal congestion, sinus pressure, cough, minor aches and pains headache, fever, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, swelling of nasal passage, temporarily restores freer breathing through the nose, and promotes sinus drainage.
Some of the other essentials in my sickness stash:
02. Two of the many signs that cold & flu season is upon us are the wet sniffles followed by earth shattering sneezes. A stockpile of soft tissues will help sooth runny noses and prevent irritation. Using your sleeve may seem convenient but it only allows the germs to spread and hang around for even longer. Tissues with Aloe & Vitamin E will help protect sensitive skin and keep hands clean.
03. A dry scratchy throat is a constant reminder that your body has been taken over by cootie bugs and germs. Cough drops will not only alleviate a sore throat and cough but can help to prevent further irritation. Sick or not, I always have a few on these in my purse because there is nothing worse than getting a throat tickle and having nothing to suppress the cough that follows.
04. A hot cup of tea and honey can do wonders when you are feeling under the weather. Staying hydrated is important when sick and herbal tea has a way of calming the entire body without upsetting your stomach. Orange Spice is one of my favorites. If tea isn’t your thing you can drink good old water or even a sports drink. Keeping a re-usable water bottle on hand reminds me to get the liquids in.
05. Cold and Flu season provides the perfect excuse to walk around in fuzzy socks all day. Everyone should have at least one comfy pair stashed away in their drawer for when they need a little extra warmth. Since your feet are the farthest away from your heart they tend to get cold awfully quickly. Icy toes are the worst. Your significant other will thank you for keeping those little things bundled up at night!
06. Prevent your cold from spreading to friends and family by having hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes available. Most sanitizers contain alcohol that acts as an antiseptic. They will kill off the lingering germs but it is still recommended that you wash your hands regularly.
Cold & Flu Season creeps up on all of us at one point or another. How do you prepare your family?
